The three things that actually clears acne-prone skin

The Clear
Skin Guide

Chapter 01

You’ve tried something new and it didn’t work, so you’re back to searching for answers again

By now, you know this feeling all too well. You’ve done this search a hundred times. A new thread. A new ingredient. A new routine that someone swears by. Another thing to add to the growing list of everything you’ve already tried, right alongside the prescriptions, diets, and appointments.

I was stuck in that cycle for sixteen years.

It took me sixteen years to understand why nothing truly worked and why acne always seemed like such a complicated problem. In this guide, I’m going to show you what’s actually happening beneath your skin that’s causing the breakouts in the first place. Because once I understood that, everything finally made sense. I could clearly see why something would work for a while and then stop, why another treatment only helped a little, and why I was still breaking out despite trying everything.

Petri dishes with botanical oils and olive leaves

You’ve tried the recommended things, yet they never fully got you there. I will break down everything you’ve tried from skincare products, prescriptions, diet, supplements, and more and how each played their part in your skin. Then I will explain what you’ve been missing and how to solve it.

Once you know this, you will never have to guess what your routine needs to be to keep your skin clear for good.

Chapter 02

It was never one problem

Every product you’ve used was built to fix one thing. Kill the bacteria. Dry up the oil. Scrub off the dead skin. And for a while, sometimes, it would seem a product was working. Yet, breakouts would come back and usually be worse than before.

It comes back because your breakouts aren’t caused by one thing. They’re caused by three things happening at the same time, each one feeding the other two. Fix one and leave the other two running, and the cycle never stops.

Golden oil droplets

This is why nothing worked. Because you were addressing one or two of the issues, and not all three at once.

Chapter 03

Three things, all at once, all feeding each other

Cross section of a damaged skin barrier

Problem 01

Your barrier and microbiome

Your skin has a wall that keeps moisture in and acne-causing bacteria out, and has a layer of protective bacteria living on top that fights breakouts for you. The products you’ve been using to treat acne break down that wall and wipe out the protective bacteria along with the bad. So your skin gets more reactive, not less, the harder you fight it.

Cross section of a pore filled with thick sebum

Problem 02

Your sebum, the amount and the quality

Sebum is the oil your skin naturally produces. Hormones tell your skin how much oil to make. The higher the hormonal levels (like cortisol, insulin, and androgens) the more they trigger these oil glands to make more oil. That’s the part everyone talks about. But there’s a second part nobody mentions: the quality of that oil. Acne-prone skin is low in linoleic acid, which keeps oil flowing thin and clean. Without it, your oil turns thick and sticky and clogs the pore. This is why two women with identical hormone levels can have completely different skin.

Cross section of dead skin cells piling up inside a pore

Problem 03

The 24-hour dead skin problem

Non acne-prone skin sheds dead cells on its own, around the clock. Acne-prone skin makes dead skin faster and sheds them off your face slower, so they pile up inside the pore. You’ve been fighting a problem that runs 24 hours a day with an exfoliant you use 15 minutes a week. You were never going to win that. Most chemical and physical exfoliators are too aggressive to use more than 1 to 2 times a week.

Chapter 04

Here’s the part that matters. These three don’t sit next to each other. They feed each other

Diagram of the breakout cycle: oil and bacteria imbalance, dead skin builds up, breakout forms, barrier damaged

A weakened barrier lets bad bacteria in and thrive. Sticky oil traps the dead skin your pores can’t shed. The trapped oil feeds the bad bacteria. The pore clogs, inflames, breaks out. That inflammation damages the barrier even more, so the next breakout comes faster.

That’s the cycle you’ve been stuck in. Fix one piece, the cycle keeps running. Fix two, it keeps running. Fix all three at the same time, and it finally stops, because the conditions that made the breakout no longer exist.

Chapter 05

Each one of these things you tried targets some part of the acne issue

Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid

01

Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid

They kill acne-causing bacteria and clear clogged pores, so skin often improves at first. But they can also weaken your skin barrier and protective microbiome, making future breakouts more likely.

Retinoids

02

Retinoids

Retinoids speed up skin cell turnover to help prevent clogged pores. But they can irritate and weaken the skin barrier, while doing nothing to improve oil quality or restore your microbiome.

Antibiotics

03

Antibiotics

Antibiotics reduce acne by killing bacteria, but they can’t distinguish between good and bad bacteria. Once treatment ends, harmful bacteria often return before the protective bacteria recover, allowing breakouts to come back.

Accutane

04

Accutane

Accutane dramatically reduces oil production, starving acne-causing bacteria. But it doesn’t repair the skin barrier, restore the microbiome, or address why excess oil was being produced in the first place.

Birth control and spironolactone

05

Birth control & spironolactone

They turn down the hormonal signal that drives oil in your pores, and for many women that helps. But they don’t change how your skin handles that signal, or fix your barrier, oil quality, or bacteria imbalance. When you stop using these, the signal returns to skin that was never made resilient and breakouts return, sometimes worse than before.

Cutting dairy, sugar and gluten

06

Cutting dairy, sugar & gluten

Diet can reduce hormonal triggers that increase oil production. But it doesn’t fix sticky sebum, a damaged skin barrier, or bacterial imbalance, which is why diet alone rarely creates lasting clear skin.

Chapter 06

Things that helped, but maybe never fully got you there…

Supplements and gut protocols

01

Supplements & gut protocols

Zinc, omega-3s, probiotics, and gut protocols support internal health. But they don’t directly address the skin barrier, microbiome, or sticky sebum where breakouts actually begin.

Single natural ingredients

02

Single natural ingredients

Tea tree, honey, clay masks, and natural oils can help with one part of acne. But acne is driven by multiple factors, so one ingredient alone can’t break the cycle.

The strip then baby it cycle

03

The strip-then-baby-it cycle

Harsh treatments damage the skin barrier, while switching to only gentle products leaves the root causes untouched. Neither approach repairs the barrier, restores the microbiome, or prevents clogged pores.

Sound familiar? If your bathroom holds a graveyard of half-used bottles, this page is why. Every one of them was a real attempt at one piece of a three-piece problem.

If you’ve ridden the fence on Accutane, or you’re scared to go off birth control because you think your skin will fall apart, this is why. You were told those were the strongest options. They’re just the ones that suppress the most. Suppressing isn’t the same as fixing, and there’s another way to get there.

So what does fixing actually look like?

Chapter 07

Your skin doesn’t need to be fought. It needs to be supported

Every treatment you’ve tried works by suppressing something. Suppress the bacteria. Suppress the oil. Suppress the hormonal signal triggering the glands to turn on. Force the skin to do something.

Which is why it all stops the moment you stop.

When the barrier is rebuilt, the protective bacteria are fed instead of killed, and the oil quality is corrected, your skin starts doing the work itself. It defends itself. It regulates its own oil. It sheds skin cells properly.

A single flower resting in a bowl of water with olive leaves

That’s the difference between managing acne symptoms vs a routine that gives your skin the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Chapter 08

You know why you break out, now how do you fix it?

So to address the issues you have to address these issues each time you do your routine:

  • Strengthens your skin barrier
  • Balance the oil and make it less sticky
  • Rebuild the skin barrier
  • Clear dead skin cells

So, here is what I found that helps solve these issues:

1. The bacteria. Feed the protective bacteria so they recover and keep the breakout bacteria from taking hold

  • Lactobacillus / rye ferment: a probiotic itself that helps support your microbiome.
  • Inulin, alpha-glucan oligosaccharide, fructan, yacon root juice: the prebiotic blend that feeds the good bacteria.
  • Leuconostoc / radish root ferment: a skin-friendly ferment that supports the microbiome.
  • Manuka, tea tree oil, bergamot & grapefruit: all are potent against acne-causing bacteria while not harming the good bacteria.

2. The oil. Help it stop overproducing and make it less sticky

  • Moringa, camellia (tea seed), pomegranate seed, apple seed oils: balanced oils that nourish the barrier without clogging pores.
  • Shea butter, cupuacu butter, tucuma kernel oil, candelilla wax: seal everything in so the barrier can hold water and rebuild.
  • Vitamin E: protects the barrier’s own fats, the exact ones harsh actives remove.
  • Helichrysum, chamomile, calendula: calm the irritation that comes with a compromised barrier.

3. The barrier. Rebuild and seal it instead of stripping it

4. The dead skin. Clear it gently, every day, every 12 hours

  • The cotton pad: lifts dead skin on every pass, mechanical instead of chemical, safe twice a day with no pH swing or harsh scrubbing on compromised skin.
  • The dual-phase cleansing process: together they lift both water-soluble debris and oil-bound buildup in one wipe.
  • Witch hazel: gently clarifies as you cleanse.

Chapter 09

A routine unlike any other

What makes it different isn’t just what’s in it, it’s how it’s applied. The two work hand in hand to fix what’s happening with your skin at the surface.

Clarifying Hydration Dew

AM & PM · Step 1

Clarifying Hydration Dew

A few sprays to prep the skin before you cleanse. Saw palmetto helps the hormonal oil signal right at the gland. Calendula, chamomile, cucumber, aloe, and rosewater calm redness. A radish root ferment starts supporting the microbiome from the very first step.

Radiant Cleansing Nectar

AM & PM · Step 2

Radiant Cleansing Nectar

Buffed over the face on a cotton pad. This is your cleanser and your gentle exfoliation all in one. Jojoba and grape seed oil balance your skin’s natural oil and make it less sticky instead of stripping it. Moringa and apple seed oil nourish the barrier, and vitamin E protects it. Manuka helps against the bad bacteria while leaving the good bacteria to flourish. Witch hazel clarifies as you go, and the cotton pad lifts dead skin, dirt, and bacteria with every pass.

Luminous Complexion Toner

AM · Step 3

Luminous Complexion Toner

After cleansing in the AM. Delivers protective bacteria, Lactobacillus ferment, straight to the surface, and comfrey supports skin cell turnover. Lemon balm and honeysuckle calm redness and support the look of large pores. The difference between rebuilding and rebuilding sooner.

Flawless Water Cream

AM · Step 4

Flawless Water Cream

A prebiotic and probiotic complex, Lactobacillus ferment plus inulin, fructan, and alpha-glucan, feeds the protective bacteria in your microbiome. Shea butter, cupuacu, and candelilla wax seal everything in so the barrier can hold water and rebuild. Pumpkin seed and rosehip keep working on the balance and fluidity of your skin’s natural oil.

Clear Skin Elixir

PM · Step 5

Clear Skin Elixir

An overnight treatment. French pink clay and rice starch draw impurities out of the pores and absorb excess oil while you sleep. Zinc helps oil production at the gland. Manuka and tea tree help against the bad bacteria overnight. 70 trace minerals from coral support the skin’s overnight renewal, and chamomile calms the look of redness.

Chapter 10

We put the routine to the test. Here’s what the results showed

↓70%

reduction in excess sebum

Over 90%

of women saw fewer clogged pores, the comedones that start breakouts

↓23%

reduction in dead skin cell build up

0

adverse reactions across all eight weeks, and not one new cyst formed

Hydration climbed and held, which means the barrier is coming back.

Here’s what you can expect when starting this routine:

Skin at weeks one to two

Week 1–2

Skin starts calming. Less redness, oil starts balancing. Skin stops hurting.

Skin at weeks four to six

Weeks 4 to 6

Texture evens out. Breakouts come less often and clear faster when they do.

Skin at weeks eight to twelve

Weeks 8–12

For most women, this is the clearest their skin has been, even through stress and hormonal changes. Your timeline depends on where your skin is starting, but you’ll often feel the difference before you see it.
